About
Lagoon is the open-source application delivery platform for Kubernetes, tailored specifically for the web and its developers, providing projects with all the configuration, tooling, and insights needed to run in production at scale, securely. Lagoon can take a project that has been configured to the Compose specification (e.g. Docker Compose) for local development, and convert this into a full Kubernetes project without the developer of the project needing to know any Kubernetes configuration or set any parameters. There are two main components to Lagoon. “Core” - which houses the API, authentication, notification, and coordination functions; and “remote” - which houses the build workloads, project, and environment namespaces, services, and ingresses, as well as any database, backup, or logging components that are required, and run any tasks, cronjobs or insight-gathering tools. Lagoon’s build and deploy system connects to the developer’s Git repository of choice (GitHub, Gitlab, BitBucket, and Gitea all supported in all their forms) to retrieve the project code and will configure the storage, ingress, and scaling automatically. It will automatically provision any managed database backends that are required, connect the project to a coordinated backup system, and collect and concentrate logs (container and application) to a destination log system. Once running, Lagoon will collect and maintain sets of insights (facts and problems) for the project, and make a range of support and maintenance tasks available to users, all with a user-friendly UI and CLI. It is designed to host a range of web applications, such as PHP, Drupal, WordPress, Laravel, Symfony, Silverstripe, Python, Django, Wagtail, CKAN, Node.JS, Ghost, Hugo, React Native, and Matomo. It can connect these projects to a range of services, such as Solr, Elasticsearch, Redis, Varnish, and RabbitMQ, built with databases such as MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB, and their commercial cloud-managed counterparts. New examples, integrations, and frameworks are being added all the time. Lagoon’s open-source and cloud-native components are optimized for accelerating and streamlining application development and delivery, allowing development teams to deploy their applications into Kubernetes without the steep learning curve.
